Trek Stats:

Did this in end of April 2023.

McLeodganj is the nearest town. I took a flight to Dharamshala airport and then a Rs 1000 taxi ride to Zostel McLeodganj.

The distance from Gallu devi temple to Triund top is ~ 5 KM one way.

Triund top is a meadow with large boulders at an altitude of 2.8 Km above sea level. There are milestones further beyond this at higher altitudes but this is a popular day/night-camping trek.

I started the trek from Gallu temple. Apparently, the trek can also be done from the Bhagsunag waterfall side. Most of the stuff I’ve read online indicates that this other trail is steep and doesn’t have the same scenery.

Notes

The trail is fairly straightforward – wide and clearly visible all the way to Triund top. There are also yellow arrows painted on the stones indicating the way. At the top , there show covered Dhauladhar range is visible on one side and Dharamshala/McLeodganj on the other.

Getting a taxi to Gallu temple may be the best way to start the trek. I tried to walk to the place from Zostel McLeodganj and lost my way for sometime (thanks Google Maps!)

There are “cafes” near the start, middle and end of the trek. These are like dhabas that sell water, beverages, snacks and stuff. While these are convenient, I’m not sure how I feel about having these plastic generators in the midst of nature.

Cafe at the half-way point of the trek

It is possible to book a tent and food for overnight camping in the cafes at the base near Gallu temple. Rs 600 for a single person tent or Rs 1000 for a tent, dinner and breakfast. Food here is nothing fancy – dal-chawal, bread omlette, maggi and tea. There are multiple camps at Triund top. It might be possible to just show up and book a tent.

There don’t seem to be any natural water sources and I ended up buying a 1L water bottle in the cafe at the top.

Weather can be very volatile, there was hail at ~2PM. Temperature dips post sun set even in May.

There are more interesting places beyond Triund at higher altitudes – Snowline, Laka glacier, Lahesh caves and Indrahar pass. I hope to return to cover these some day.
